The Sui blockchain will launch its 'Hashi' mainnet in a phased rollout starting in October 2026, supported by over $500 million in committed capital. The platform intends to bridge institutional Bitcoin holdings into programmable financial markets, addressing a liquidity gap for large-scale asset holders.
Anchorage Digital, a federally chartered crypto bank, has joined the initiative as a launch partner. The firm will provide institutional clients with access to the Hashi ecosystem through specialized tri-party collateral solutions and self-custody wallet integrations.
"Bitcoin has already become a global reserve asset, and today, the financial infrastructure around it is catching up," said Adeniyi Abiodun, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer of Mysten Labs, in a company statement.
Expanding Utility for Institutional Bitcoin
For many institutional investors, Bitcoin has functioned as a "buy and hold" asset because of the technical risks associated with moving large sums across disparate blockchain networks. The Hashi architecture mitigates these risks by allowing Bitcoin to remain on its native network while its value is leveraged elsewhere.
"Public companies and institutions hold enormous amounts of Bitcoin, but their ability to use that capital has been constrained by the technology available to them and the limitations of the DeFi space," said Nathan McCauley, CEO and Co-Founder of Anchorage Digital.
How Hashi Collateralization Works
Hashi functions through a mint-and-burn mechanism that coordinates Bitcoin collateral via Sui smart contracts. When a user deposits Bitcoin, the system mints hBTC on the Sui network for use within decentralized finance applications. Upon withdrawal, the hBTC is burned, and the corresponding Bitcoin is released on the native network.
This technical approach allows institutions to deploy capital into yield-generating or lending protocols without bridging their underlying assets permanently. By keeping the primary collateral on the Bitcoin network, the system reduces the counterparty and bridge-related risks that have deterred institutional participation in decentralized financial products.
Market Implications
This launch integrates institutional-grade custody with the speed and programmability of the Sui blockchain. By securing $500 million in initial capital, the project establishes a liquidity foundation for large-scale financial operations, shifting from experimental DeFi use cases toward institutionally accessible financial infrastructure.
