LG Energy Solution shares climbed to a four-month high after the company reported a third-quarter operating profit of 756 billion won. This figure is more than double the 365.5 billion won consensus estimate compiled by Bloomberg. The results reflect a pivot toward energy-storage systems (ESS) as the firm manages weakness in global electric-vehicle (EV) demand.
"In the short term, ESS and cylindrical batteries are supporting earnings," said Lee Jin-myung, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Securities, in a recent report.
Impact of U.S. Tax Credits
A factor in the company’s performance is its profitability when excluding U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Production Credits. LG Energy Solution reported an operating profit of 339.1 billion won excluding these credits, a turnaround from the 127.7 billion won loss recorded in the second quarter. This shift shows the company's ability to maintain margins while the EV sector faces production headwinds.
Strategic Pivot to ESS
LG Energy Solution is expanding its North American ESS production capacity to meet demand from AI data centers and utility-scale infrastructure. The company projects its capacity will exceed 50 GWh by the end of the year. This expansion aims to capture the need for grid-scale energy storage, which has become a stable revenue driver compared to the volatile consumer EV market.
What Is at Stake for Battery Suppliers
The company's performance highlights the importance of diversification for battery manufacturers. As EV adoption rates fluctuate, suppliers are relying on stationary storage and high-performance cylindrical battery segments to stabilize cash flow. For LG Energy Solution, the ability to reach core profitability without relying on government tax incentives represents a change in its financial profile that investors have rewarded.
