Amazon is cutting fewer than 1,000 white-collar jobs in its retail division, continuing a restructuring effort following 30,000 layoffs earlier this year.

Amazon has initiated a new round of layoffs affecting fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees. These cuts primarily impact the 'Stores' unit that manages the company's core e-commerce operations. This reduction follows a downsizing earlier this year, during which the firm eliminated 30,000 roles as it recalibrates its workforce after a period of rapid expansion.

"We've adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities," a spokesperson said in an emailed statement regarding the cuts.

Scope of the Reductions

The job losses are global in scale. They impact teams across the United States, India, and the United Kingdom. Affected departments include customer service, engineering, and selling partner services. The timing of the announcement coincides with 'Prime Big Deal Days,' one of the company's major annual shopping events. This creates a contrast between the firm's peak seasonal consumer activity and its internal organizational downsizing.

Context: Pandemic-Era Overhiring

These layoffs are part of a multi-year effort to streamline operations following the headcount growth Amazon undertook during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, the company increased its staff to meet a surge in online shopping demand.

"People were staying home and they were ordering, and it was an incredible, stressful period for us, by the way. The whole team worked extremely hard and did so much, but we really grew our head count," said Jeff Bezos, founder and executive chairman of Amazon, regarding the necessity of ongoing job cuts due to pandemic-era overhiring.

Operational Impact

For Amazon, the 'Stores' business represents the foundation of its revenue model. By trimming white-collar headcount in this division, the company aims to optimize its organizational structure for efficiency. While the current reduction of fewer than 1,000 roles is smaller than the 30,000 cuts reported earlier in 2026, it signals that the company’s restructuring process remains ongoing as management evaluates team utility against its current strategic priorities.
