Nike has appointed LVMH executive Alexandre Arnault to its board of directors. This move is intended to support the company's luxury brand positioning and digital strategy as it faces financial headwinds. The appointment became effective September 15, 2026, and expands the board to 12 members.
"Alexandre has earned a reputation for helping iconic global brands evolve, innovate and grow in a changing, complex marketplace," said Mark Parker, Executive Chairman of Nike, in a statement.
Arnault, 34, currently serves as the Deputy CEO of Moët Hennessy and sits on the board of LVMH. Nike leadership stated that his background in luxury retail and brand management should help the company navigate its current market challenges.
"Alexandre understands how some of the world's most influential brands stay relevant, deepen consumer connections and drive long-term growth," said Elliott Hill, President & CEO of Nike.
Compensation and Governance
According to an 8-K filing with the SEC, the board granted Arnault a sign-on award of restricted Class B shares valued at $200,000. These shares are subject to forfeiture if his service as a director terminates within one year of the grant date.
Why This Matters Now
The addition of Arnault comes at a difficult point for the athletic company. Nike has seen its share price decline by 40% throughout 2026, reflecting investor concern over slowing revenue growth and increased competition in the footwear and apparel sector.
Nike is also scheduled to be removed from the S&P 100 index on September 21, 2026. This exit marks the end of an 18-year tenure in the index. The change often triggers rebalancing by index-tracking funds and highlights the company's diminished market capitalization relative to its peers. By recruiting a director with experience in the high-end luxury sector, Nike is attempting to pivot its brand narrative toward premium positioning and digital innovation to address these trends.
