Timken is executing its "Elevate to Outperform" strategy, targeting an EBITDA margin expansion of 500 basis points to reach a 21-23% range by 2028. The industrial manufacturer is applying an 80/20 operating model to drive this structural shift, moving away from current high-teens performance levels.
"We said we are going to structurally improve margins by 500 basis points. That is a significant number because it is not by sometime out there, it is by 2028," said Lucian Boldea, Chief Executive Officer of Timken, during the Morgan Stanley Laguna conference.
The 80/20 Operating Mechanism
The company’s margin expansion relies on the 80/20 principle, a management framework designed to optimize resource allocation. The model assumes that 80% of a company's value is generated by 20% of its products or customers. By identifying these segments, Timken intends to simplify its operations and reduce complexity.
"The 80s is why you do it. That is where you want to focus, and the 20s is where the resources come from so that you can afford to take better care of the 80s," said Boldea.
To date, 75% of the organization has completed training on this operating model. The initiative is intended to move the firm beyond traditional incremental growth by changing how internal resources are distributed across its product portfolio.
Robotics and Humanoid Growth Pipeline
Beyond internal efficiency, Timken is positioning itself to capture demand in the robotics and humanoid sector. The company reports over $100 million in customer pipeline engagement within this space, with active prototyping and co-innovation projects underway.
"We’re kind of at the beginning of an investment cycle and a revolution in that space that’s maybe a once in a generation opportunity," said Boldea.
Strategic Implications
The push toward 2028 goals represents a shift in how Timken manages its capital and operational footprint. By focusing on high-margin segments, the company seeks to insulate its bottom line from the cyclicality associated with industrial manufacturing. The success of this strategy depends on the firm's ability to convert its $100 million robotics pipeline into realized revenue while maintaining the operational discipline required by its 80/20 model.
