UnitedHealth Group reported third-quarter 2026 financial results that surpassed Wall Street expectations on both profit and revenue, prompting the healthcare giant to raise its full-year guidance as cost pressures eased.
The health insurer posted adjusted earnings of $4.69 per share for the quarter, topping the $4.12 consensus forecast from analysts. Revenue reached $112.7 billion, exceeding expectations of $111.31 billion, according to an Investing.com report.
"Our revised full year 2026 guidance reflects continuing improvements in leadership and execution across Optum and UnitedHealthcare as we better align our businesses to serve the demands of the ever-changing U.s. healthcare environment," said Steve Hemsley, Chief Executive, UnitedHealth Group, in a statement regarding the release.
Medical Care Ratio and Financial Performance
A primary driver of the stronger quarterly performance was improved management of medical expenses. The company's medical care ratio improved to 88.4% during the third quarter, dropping from 89.9% in the same period a year earlier.
The medical care ratio, also known as the MCR, measures the proportion of premium revenues spent on direct patient care and medical services. A lower ratio generally indicates tighter cost controls and improved operational efficiency for health insurers.
Following the earnings release and raised outlook, UnitedHealth shares rose 3.84% in premarket trading to $393.07.
AI Deployment in Clinical Operations
During the earnings call, executives highlighted operational efficiencies gained through newly deployed artificial intelligence tools across the company's provider networks and administrative workflows.
"We have expanded AI-enabled chart summarization to more than 40% of our employed clinicians, reducing chart review time by 33%," said Steve Hemsley, Chief Executive, UnitedHealth Group.
UnitedHealth also detailed improvements in administrative processing times. The company stated that automated information gathering reduced appeal cycle times across its networks.
"AI-enabled information gathering and research have shortened appeal cycle times by 26%, improving both member and clinician experience, and we expect this to accelerate in 2027," said Steve Hemsley, Chief Executive, UnitedHealth Group.
Full-Year Outlook Revision
Backed by the third-quarter performance and operational cost management, UnitedHealth lifted its full-year adjusted earnings per share outlook to at least $20.50. The revised guidance marks a key benchmark for the health insurance sector as major carriers navigate utilization trends and medical cost inflation heading into 2027.
