Generate Biomedicines and Zealand Pharma have entered a strategic partnership to develop AI-engineered protein therapeutics for obesity and metabolic diseases. The deal focuses on two initial programs with an option for a third, and it carries a total potential value of nearly $1.2 billion in milestone payments.

"This collaboration expands our toolbox to include proteins, complementing our existing small-molecule and peptide capabilities," said Utpal Singh, chief scientific officer at Zealand Pharma, in a statement regarding the release.

Financial Structure and Operational Roles

Under the terms of the agreement, Generate Biomedicines will receive an initial $30 million payment. The company is also eligible for up to $35 million in early preclinical milestone payments for the first two programs. The total potential value of the partnership reaches nearly $1.2 billion, supplemented by tiered royalties on future sales.

The operational division of labor delegates specific phases of the drug development lifecycle to each partner based on their core competencies:

  • Generate Biomedicines: Responsible for research activities through lead-candidate selection, utilizing its proprietary generative AI platform to design protein structures.
  • Zealand Pharma: Manages subsequent clinical development, regulatory filings, and worldwide commercialization of the resulting therapies.

Expanding the Therapeutic Pipeline

The partnership aims to use AI to address metabolic conditions, a sector that has seen investment as demand for weight-management treatments rises. The contract includes an option to add a third program, providing a mechanism for the companies to expand the scope of their joint research if the initial candidates demonstrate success.

By integrating Generate Biomedicines' AI-driven protein design with Zealand Pharma's clinical and commercial infrastructure, the companies are attempting to shorten the discovery phase for novel therapeutics. This approach follows a trend of biotech firms pairing computational biology platforms with pharmaceutical partners to manage development risks.
