Coppernico Metals has signed a contract with AK Drilling International S.A. for a 5,000-meter diamond drilling program at its Sombrero copper-gold project in Peru. This agreement initiates the second phase of the project. The contract remains subject to 'start-of-activities' authorization from Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, which the company expects to receive in the coming months.
"We are pleased to continue our collaboration with AK Drilling, following their strong operational performance during our Phase 1 drill program and demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental management," said Ivan Bebek, CEO and Chair of Coppernico, in a statement. "We look forward to working with them again as we take this important next step toward testing the key target areas at Sombrero through a larger, focused, multi-target drill program."
Operational History and Phase 2 Scope
The Phase 2 program follows an initial exploration round that the company completed without safety incidents. The upcoming work aims to test specific target areas within the Sombrero project, located in the Ayacucho region of Peru. According to the official company release, the company selected AK Drilling based on their performance during the first phase of exploration.
Financial Backing and Ownership
Coppernico has secured funding for the initial stages of this program through C$6.5 million raised in recent financing rounds. This capital structure includes participation from Teck Resources Limited, which maintains a 9.9% equity stake in the company.
Securing major industry partners like Teck Resources provides information regarding project interest. The funding ensures the company has the liquidity to initiate the 5,000-meter program once the government permits are finalized.
Regulatory Dependencies
For mining firms operating in Peru, the 'start-of-activities' authorization is a regulatory milestone. This permit ensures that the proposed drilling locations and environmental management plans meet national standards for extractive activities. The company cannot legally commence the diamond drilling operations until the Ministry of Energy and Mines grants this authorization.
