BMO Capital downgraded AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU) to Market Perform from Outperform, pointing to a valuation premium following a strong multi-year market rally that pushed shares to $108.53. Despite the rating change, the firm maintained its $115.00 price target on the gold producer.
The adjustment reflects a reassessment of the equity following sustained outperformance rather than a shift in operational health. BMO Capital highlighted the company's 75.8% return over the past year, which has left the stock trading at a meaningful premium to its net asset value.
Valuation Metrics and Share Performance
The mining sector has experienced capital inflows amid fluctuating macroeconomic conditions, benefiting senior producers with balance sheets. AngloGold Ashanti's extended run has elevated its valuation multiples relative to historical averages, prompting analysts to lock in views on the stock's near-term upside.
"The valuation premium reflects strong relative performance over the past three years," BMO Capital noted in its ratings update regarding the stock.
While the headline rating was lowered, the firm kept its price target unchanged at $115.00, signaling limited further capital appreciation from current trading levels without additional catalysts.
Capital Returns and Buyback Strategy
To support shareholder returns, AngloGold Ashanti is navigating a $2.0 billion share repurchase authorization. BMO Capital expects management to deploy this buyback program selectively at current price levels rather than aggressively accelerating purchases while the valuation sits at a premium.
In addition to share repurchases, the company maintains a consistent dividend profile. AngloGold Ashanti has raised its dividend for three consecutive years and currently offers a dividend yield of 2.65%.
Recent Earnings and Financial Background
The rating change follows the company's second-quarter 2026 financial report, which presented a mixed picture of top-line results and underlying cash generation. AngloGold Ashanti posted basic earnings per share of $1.96, missing the consensus analyst estimate of $2.04.
Revenue for the period reached $3.1 billion, falling short of the anticipated $3.3 billion. Even with the earnings and revenue misses, management emphasized improvements in operational cash flow, higher EBITDA, and a strengthened balance sheet supported by prevailing commodity prices.
