Wells Fargo surpassed Wall Street profit expectations for the third quarter of 2026 despite missing consensus revenue estimates, driven by improved operating efficiency and year-over-year gains in net interest income, according to a Yahoo Finance report.
"Our third quarter results reflect broad-based growth, higher earnings, and stronger returns," said Chairman and CEO Charlie Scharf, in the Yahoo Finance report. "Diluted earnings per share increased to $1.87 in the third quarter, up 13% from a year ago."
Q3 Financial Metrics and Revenue Performance
Net income reached $6.0 billion, or $1.87 per diluted share, outperforming the analyst consensus estimate of $1.84 per share. Total revenue came in at $21.87 billion, missing Wall Street's expectation of $22.31 billion while marking a 2% increase from $21.44 billion in the same period last year.
Net interest income hit $12.52 billion, representing a 5% increase year-over-year, though it still fell slightly short of the $12.59 billion analyst estimate. Average loans expanded 11% year-over-year to $1.03 trillion, and average deposits also grew 11% to reach $1.48 trillion.
Efficiency Gains and Credit Loss Provisions
Operating efficiency improved as the company's efficiency ratio strengthened to 63%, compared to 65% in the prior year period. Noninterest expense declined 1% to $13.74 billion, supporting the bottom-line beat.
At the same time, Wells Fargo increased its provision for credit losses to $1.03 billion from $681 million a year earlier. According to the Yahoo Finance report, the higher provision reflects increased allowances for commercial and industrial loans as well as auto loans.
Market Response and Shareholder Value
In public market trading, Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE: WFC) shares traded at $83.87, rising 1.35% from a previous close of $82.75, according to Finnhub market data as of October 16, 2026, at 20:00 UTC. The earnings report demonstrates how major financial institutions are navigating shifting net interest margins by tightly controlling noninterest expenses while expanding underlying loan and deposit portfolios.
