Morgan Stanley has resumed coverage of the sportswear sector with a cautious outlook. The firm designated On Holding as its only 'Overweight' rating and warned that industry incumbents face a difficult path to growth.
Analysts led by Alex Straton stated that the sector faces headwinds from structural industry fragmentation, elevated promotional activity, and weakening consumer sponsorship. This defensive stance reflects skepticism toward the recovery prospects for traditional market leaders.
"We see a 'triple headwind' of structural industry fragmentation, elevated promotions, and weak consumer sponsorship," the Morgan Stanley research team noted in a recent sector report.
Divergent Outlooks for Industry Leaders
Morgan Stanley’s analysis highlights a divide between emerging brands and established players. The firm’s ratings for four major sportswear companies reflect this selective approach:
- On Holding: Rated 'Overweight' with a $39 price target, which implies approximately 45% upside from current levels.
- Adidas: Rated 'Equal-weight' with a $31 price target, as analysts suggest the stock's current valuation leaves little room for further multiple expansion.
- Nike: Rated 'Underweight' with a $31 price target, citing concerns that market consensus expectations are too optimistic regarding a recovery in the Chinese market.
- Under Armour: Rated 'Underweight' with a $4 price target, with analysts stating that the company's "turnaround traction remains limited."
Why Nike and Under Armour Face Pressure
The 'Underweight' ratings for Nike and Under Armour underscore analyst concerns regarding earnings visibility. For Nike, the Morgan Stanley report suggests that investors are pricing in a rebound that may be delayed by macroeconomic pressures. Similarly, the assessment of Under Armour focuses on the execution risks inherent in its ongoing restructuring efforts, which have yet to produce consistent financial improvements.
Market Implications
This sector reassessment comes as sportswear firms grapple with shifting consumer preferences and the challenge of maintaining premium pricing in a market crowded by specialized athletic brands. By isolating On Holding as the only 'Overweight' pick, Morgan Stanley is signaling that it favors companies with distinct growth narratives over those attempting to regain market share in a fragmented and promotional environment.
