Levi Strauss & Co. raised its full-year adjusted earnings forecast to $1.54–$1.56 per share, up from its previous projection of $1.46–$1.52, following a one-time tariff refund. Although the earnings outlook improved, company shares faced downward pressure as investors compared the financial boost against weaker-than-expected direct-to-consumer demand in the U.S. and European markets.
The profit adjustment follows the company's receipt of $79 million in tariff refunds during the quarter ended August 30. These funds were recovered under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, a U.S. federal law that grants the president authority to regulate commerce after declaring a national emergency. Levi Strauss plans to reinvest approximately $60 million of this money into marketing and promotional activities to increase brand visibility.
Operational Headwinds in Key Markets
While the tariff recovery provides a fiscal cushion, leadership acknowledged specific operational missteps and environmental challenges that impacted recent performance. CEO Michelle Gass pointed to a strategic error in the company's domestic marketing approach.
"The back-to-school US campaign focused too heavily on loose-fitting pants rather than popular low-rise styles," said Michelle Gass, Chief Executive Officer, Levi Strauss & Co., in a statement regarding the results.
Outside the U.S., the company faced external pressures in Europe. Gass noted that warm weather conditions throughout the region dampened consumer appetite for seasonal apparel, leading to reduced store traffic and lower sales volume.
Financial Context and Market Valuation
These results highlight the tension between one-time balance sheet improvements and core operational execution. The company is navigating a retail environment where consumer preferences are shifting, requiring precise inventory management to avoid the product-mix issues identified by management.
As of October 13, 2026, Levi Strauss & Co (LEVI) shares are trading at $19.44. The company's ability to convert its reinvested $60 million into sales growth remains a focal point for shareholders as they assess whether the current earnings guidance accounts for the ongoing weakness in direct-to-consumer channels.
