Huawei has launched its Mate 90 smartphone series. The devices feature a proprietary 3D chip architecture called 'LogicFolding' designed to circumvent U.S. semiconductor export restrictions. The flagship Mate 90 Pro Max utilizes the new Kirin 9050 Pro chip, which restructures internal wiring in three dimensions to improve processing speed and transistor density while operating with limited access to advanced lithography tools.
"Advanced semiconductor capacity remains very limited in China, and Huawei’s Ascend AI chips also draw on that same capacity," said Richard Yu, Huawei consumer business chief, in a statement regarding the release.
Technical Workarounds for Supply Limits
The 'LogicFolding' architecture acts as a strategic workaround for Huawei. The company faces barriers to importing the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines required for standard high-density chip manufacturing. By stacking circuitry in three dimensions instead of relying on finer process nodes, the company intends to maintain performance metrics.
The company continues to navigate a constrained supply environment. "The capacity for smartphone chips remains tight, even though rising smartphone prices have curbed shipment volumes," Yu noted.
Market Positioning and Competition
The Mate 90 Pro Max enters the market at 9,999 yuan ($1,491). This is a 2,000 yuan increase over its predecessor's launch price. This pricing strategy reflects the higher costs of domestic chip production and Huawei's 75% market share in the domestic foldable handset sector.
Huawei leadership expressed confidence in its current trajectory. The company reported that sales of its Pura X Max foldable phone surged 76% week-on-week between September 10 and 13, following the launch of the Apple Duo.
"I am very pleased to see the launch of a similar product by our peers," said Yu regarding Apple's recent expansion into the foldable handset category.
What Is at Stake
The reliance on 'LogicFolding' highlights the technological decoupling occurring in the semiconductor sector. As Huawei scales its proprietary designs, the company must balance the limited capacity of domestic foundries across its consumer handset division and its Ascend AI chip production. Maintaining high-end device performance without access to globalized supply chains is the primary hurdle for the firm's growth in the high-margin smartphone segment.
