Morgan Stanley has downgraded Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) from Equalweight to Underweight and reduced its price target from $8.00 to $5.20. The firm cites persistent margin pressures and intensifying competition from Chinese automakers. This change reflects skepticism regarding the company's ability to achieve a profit margin recovery that matches previous industry cycles.

"While the cyclical margin bottom appears behind the European auto sector, expected margin recovery will remain depressed compared to past cycles due to stiff competition from Chinese automakers limiting investment reductions," said Javier Martinez de Olcoz Cerdan, an analyst at Morgan Stanley, in a research note.

Market Performance and Valuation

Stellantis shares trade at $5.31, sitting near a 52-week low of $5.05. The stock has faced downward pressure throughout the year, with shares down more than 50% year-to-date. The company's Price/Book ratio of 0.22 indicates that the market is pricing in long-term headwinds for the manufacturer.

Diverging Analyst Perspectives

Other firms maintain a different stance. TD Cowen holds a Hold rating on the stock with a $6.00 price target. TD Cowen states this rating is supported by a constructive tone from the company's investor relations department regarding future guidance and anticipated productivity savings targets.

Competitive Pressures in Europe

The downgrade highlights a concern within the European automotive sector: the transition to electric vehicles combined with the expansion of Chinese manufacturers. These competitors have introduced pricing pressure that limits the ability of legacy automakers to reduce investment costs, which caps the potential for margin expansion. For investors, the divergence between analyst targets highlights the uncertainty surrounding the ability of Stellantis to navigate these structural shifts while maintaining profitability targets.
