Vertex Pharmaceuticals presented interim clinical trial data showing that young children with cystic fibrosis experienced pancreatic function recovery after treatment with ALYFTREK. The findings point to potential disease modification when intervention begins at an early age.

"These data represent a profound shift in how we understand the benefits of treating cystic fibrosis in its earliest stages," said Carmen Bozic, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Vertex, in a statement regarding the findings.

Substudy Results in Young Children

The data stem from a substudy of the ongoing open-label extension study VX22-121-106, which evaluated 48 children between the ages of 2 and 5 years. According to an Investing.com report, 18 of those children, representing 37.5% of the substudy cohort, successfully discontinued pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) for a mean duration of 8.6 weeks at the interim analysis. An additional 7 participants had discontinued PERT before entering the substudy.

Across the full enrolled cohort of 66 children, 50% were not taking PERT at the data cutoff. Mean fecal elastase-1 levels reached 239.7 μg/g, marking a mean increase of 110.2 μg/g from baseline. Nearly half of the cohort, or 48.6%, reached the clinical threshold for pancreatic sufficiency at concentrations of ≥200 μg/g.

Regulatory Status and Market Performance

While ALYFTREK is already approved for patients aged 6 years and older with cystic fibrosis who carry at least one responsive variant in the CFTR gene, its use in children aged 2 to 5 years remains strictly investigational. The interim data were presented at the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference.

In public markets, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc (VRTX) stock traded at $508.75, rising 2.1% from its previous close of $498.50, according to Finnhub market data as of October 15, 2026.
