Consumer demand for AI-integrated hardware is accelerating smartphone replacement cycles. Holding periods now fall to a range of 2.1 to 2.7 years, according to a Citi research note. This shift marks a contraction from the previous historical norm of 2.9 to 4.3 years.

Analysts note that Apple is positioned to capture this market momentum. Data indicates that consumer purchase consideration for Apple devices currently exceeds existing ownership levels across multiple key markets, signaling a potential expansion of the company's installed base.

"Apple Intelligence is unlikely to trigger a major replacement cycle in the short term, the new generation of Siri artificial intelligence features will boost user engagement and provide long-term growth momentum for the high-margin services business," said Asiya Merchant, analyst at Citi, in a report.

Impact on Services and Pricing Power

While the immediate hardware upgrade cycle remains gradual, the long-term strategy focuses on the ecosystem's retention. By integrating advanced AI features into the core interface, Apple aims to increase user engagement to drive recurring revenue within its high-margin services segment.

Citi responded to these growth prospects by raising its price target for Apple stock to $365 from $315. According to market analysis, this revision reflects confidence in the company's brand positioning and its ability to utilize pricing power to mitigate the impact of rising component costs.

What Is at Stake for Hardware Manufacturers

The transition toward AI-enabled devices represents a shift in how manufacturers incentivize loyalty. For Apple, the strategy relies on the integration of "Apple Intelligence" to differentiate its hardware from competitors. As replacement cycles continue to tighten, the ability to offer AI-driven utility becomes a primary factor in maintaining market share, as consumers prioritize software-enabled features alongside traditional hardware specifications.
