U.S. private sector employment increased by 90,000 jobs in September. This rebound surpasses market expectations and signals a stabilization in hiring after a three-month period of cooling growth.
The latest figures from the ADP National Employment Report outperformed the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 68,000 new positions. The result is an improvement over August, which saw a downwardly revised gain of 36,000 jobs.
"It's a strong report. After a three-month slowdown, job creation rebounded and pay growth remained solid," said Dr. Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, in a statement regarding the release.
Sector-Specific Trends
Job growth varied across the economy. Hiring was concentrated in the service sector, while other industries experienced contraction:
- Education and health services: Added 55,000 positions, acting as the primary driver of growth.
- Financial activities: Recorded the steepest decline, shedding 16,000 jobs during the month.
Wage Growth Metrics
Beyond headcount, the report highlighted trends in compensation. Base pay for private-sector workers increased by 3.2% on a year-over-year basis. Gross pay saw a larger rise, growing by 4.7% compared to the same period last year.
These wage figures reflect current inflationary pressure within the labor market. As companies adjust to shifting demand, the persistence of these pay growth levels suggests that employers continue to face competition for talent, even as specific sectors like finance reduce their workforce.
Implications for the Labor Market
Economists watch the September data as a precursor to the broader, government-issued employment situation report. By focusing on private payrolls, the ADP data offers a snapshot of business-led hiring decisions, distinct from government sector employment. The stabilization indicated by this month's report suggests that businesses have maintained enough confidence to resume hiring at a pace that exceeds the levels seen throughout the summer.
