Legal & General Group Plc has commenced the second £600 million tranche of its £1.2 billion share buyback programme, with purchases scheduled to run through March 22, 2027. The phased capital return strategy follows the completion of the programme's initial phase, marking the next step in the financial firm's capital allocation plan.
"Legal & General Group Plc commenced the second £600m tranche of its £1.2bn share buyback programme," according to an Investing.com report.
Buyback Timeline and Prior Tranche
The launch follows the completion of the first buyback tranche, which began on March 12, 2026, and concluded on September 11, 2026. The newly initiated second tranche will continue until it reaches its monetary cap or hits the final deadline in March 2027, according to the report.
To execute the purchases independently, Legal & General entered into a non-discretionary agreement with J.P. Morgan Securities plc. Under this arrangement, J.P. Morgan acts as riskless principal to acquire shares on the open market for subsequent repurchase and cancellation by the company.
Share Limits and Shareholder Authority
The total volume of repurchases is bound by regulatory limits established during corporate governance votes. The maximum number of ordinary shares that may be acquired across the remainder of the programme is set at 478,827,626.
This ceiling represents the remaining shareholder authority granted at Legal & General's Annual General Meeting on May 21, 2026. Cancelling repurchased shares reduces total outstanding equity, which alters per-share financial metrics over time.
Asset Scale and International Footprint
Established in 1836, Legal & General operates as a major institutional asset manager and financial services provider. The firm reported £1.2 trillion in total assets under management as of the first half of 2026.
Of that total asset base, approximately 44% is held internationally, reflecting the firm's global investment footprint alongside its core domestic operations in the United Kingdom.
