U.S. President Donald Trump is evaluating a potential diesel export ban alongside a package of emergency measures to contain surging fuel prices, according to a Yahoo News report. The policy proposals aim to relieve mounting political and economic pressure on the administration as energy costs accelerate ahead of upcoming midterm elections.

U.S. diesel prices reached $6.53 a gallon last week, marking an increase of more than 70% compared to prewar levels, according to the report. The sharp escalation in fuel costs has severely squeezed operating margins for freight carriers, agricultural producers, and manufacturers dependent on heavy-duty transport.

Administration officials have discussed restricting international diesel sales and have briefed key global allies, including Britain, regarding potential supply disruptions and market realignments that could stem from U.S. trade restrictions, per Yahoo News.

Additional Policy Options on the Table

Beyond an outright export ban, the administration is deliberating several supplementary interventions to increase domestic supply and lower retail costs. According to reporting from Yahoo News, these measures include:

  • Further Jones Act waivers to facilitate domestic maritime fuel transport.
  • Targeted tax relief measures for energy consumers.
  • Easing regulatory rules that govern the use of lower-cost dyed diesel.

Market Impact and Political Stakes

The energy crisis has ignited intense debate among industry stakeholders, pitting domestic agricultural groups and logistics providers against major oil refining companies. Refiners typically favor unrestricted export markets to maximize profitability, while agricultural and transport sectors argue that high domestic fuel prices threaten broader economic stability.

In public markets, Trump Media & Technology Group Corp (DJT) traded at $8.91, up 1.37% as of 2026-10-02T20:00:00.000Z, according to Finnhub market data.
