Soitec shares climbed 7% following a BofA Securities upgrade that cited the company's market position in silicon photonics and improved long-term demand visibility. The move reflects confidence in the semiconductor materials firm as it scales capacity to meet data center requirements.

BofA Securities upgraded the stock to 'buy' from 'neutral' and increased its price target to €300 from €152. The adjustment reflects a change in sentiment regarding the company's ability to capitalize on the expansion of high-speed data transmission technologies.

"The upgrade reflects our increased confidence in Soitec’s structural growth, driven by its 90%-plus market share of the key material used in silicon photonics," analysts at BofA Securities noted in a recent research report.

Scaling for Photonics Growth

Soitec is preparing for a period of expansion, with internal projections expecting photonics wafer growth to reach 2.5 to 3 times current levels by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. To support this trajectory, BofA analysts expect the company to announce a €700 million expansion of its Singapore manufacturing facility in the coming months. This project is slated to add 1 million 300mm wafers to the firm’s annual production capacity.

Contractual Protection and Market Position

Soitec has bolstered its revenue predictability through the use of 'take-or-pay' contracts. Under these agreements, major customers are committed to paying for a specified volume of wafers regardless of their actual usage. This provides the company with a buffer against short-term cyclical volatility in the semiconductor market.

Silicon photonics, which uses light rather than electricity to transmit data, is vital for the high-speed interconnects required in artificial intelligence and hyperscale data centers. Soitec’s market share of the specialized substrates required for these components positions it as a primary beneficiary of the build-out in global AI infrastructure.

This upgrade arrives as the company navigates the capital-intensive phase of its capacity expansion. By securing long-term commitments from customers, Soitec aims to de-risk the investments required for its Singapore site and other production upgrades, ensuring that the new capacity is met with guaranteed demand.
