Softcat shares fell over 7% as the U.K. IT infrastructure provider issued a cautious fiscal 2027 profit growth outlook, overshadowing a double-digit increase in annual operating profit for the year ended July 31.
The market reaction contrasts with the company's recent financial results, highlighting investor sensitivity to forward-looking margin pressures and slowing growth rates in the technology distribution sector.
"Artificial intelligence is one of several factors making IT infrastructure more critical, complex and strategically important," said Graham Charlton, Chief Executive, Softcat, in a statement regarding the results.
Financial Performance and Profit Margins
During the 12-month period ending July 31, underlying operating profit rose 19.4% to £215.1 million, according to a Yahoo Finance report. Annual gross profit increased 24.7% to £616.3 million, driven by steady demand across corporate and public sector accounts.
Despite the gains in operating and gross profit, trailing net profit margin slipped to 7.6% compared with 9.1% a year earlier, according to data from Yahoo Finance. This margin compression underscored the profitability pressures accompanying the revenue expansion.
Supply Constraints and the GDT Acquisition
Looking ahead, Softcat forecast underlying operating profit growth in the new financial year to be 'high single-digit,' slightly ahead of anticipated gross profit growth. This projection explicitly excludes any financial contribution from Softcat's acquisition of GDT, a U.S.-based multi-vendor IT solutions provider announced after the close of the financial year.
Charlton also pointed to external market headwinds affecting operational planning.
"Memory chip supply constraints have added complexity to pricing, availability and planning," said Graham Charlton, Chief Executive, Softcat, addressing the operational environment.
What Is at Stake for IT Providers
The market pullback reflects investor scrutiny over how traditional IT providers manage supply chain bottlenecks and maintain margins during periods of strategic expansion. As enterprise customers demand more complex infrastructure to support artificial intelligence deployments, companies like Softcat must balance rapid revenue scaling against cost inflation and component availability.
