GSK is proposing up to 1,217 permanent job cuts in Belgium as part of a three-year cost-saving initiative designed to streamline operations and offset an approaching patent cliff for its flagship HIV treatments, according to a Euronext financial news report.

The restructuring plan targets approximately 14% of the British drugmaker's 8,500-person workforce in Belgium. The reductions form part of a broader corporate strategy to trim £1.9 billion ($2.50 billion) in structural costs globally, comparing against a total worldwide headcount of 66,841 employees recorded at the close of last year.

"GSK plans to cut up to 1,217 permanent jobs in Belgium, where it employs about 8,500 people, as part of a three-year plan to save £1.9 billion ($2.50 billion) in costs," according to the Euronext report.

Operational Impact Across Belgian Sites

The proposed workforce reductions will specifically impact employees stationed at GSK facilities in Rixensart, Wavre, and Gembloux. However, manufacturing and factory workers across these Belgian sites have been excluded from the current round of planned cuts.

The restructuring push was initiated under the direction of CEO Luke Miels during July. Management structured the cost-saving effort to accelerate internal drug development pipelines and reassure public market investors regarding the company's long-term margin stability.

Preparing for the Dolutegravir Patent Cliff

At the center of GSK's strategic pivot is the impending patent expiration for dolutegravir, the active ingredient in blockbuster HIV medications such as Tivicay and Triumeq. Pharmaceutical companies frequently initiate sweeping cost-reduction programs ahead of patent cliffs to protect operating margins as high-margin branded therapeutics face generic competition.

By cutting administrative and non-manufacturing overhead, the pharmaceutical firm aims to fund newer pipeline assets and stabilize free cash flow. The cuts in Belgium represent one of the largest localized workforce reductions announced under the wider three-year efficiency mandate.
