Rigetti Secures $100M CHIPS Act Deal to Boost Quantum R&D
Rigetti Computing shares rose 4% after finalizing a $100 million agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS Act.

Rigetti Computing shares rose 4% Tuesday after converting a May letter of intent into a definitive $100 million agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce to accelerate superconducting quantum computing research and development, according to an Investing.com report. The binding contract marks a milestone for the quantum infrastructure firm as it scales its multi-qubit systems.
"We are proud to be selected by the U.s. government to accelerate R&D and progress against our roadmap to deliver commercially viable quantum computing capabilities," said Dr. Subodh Kulkarni, Rigetti CEO.
CHIPS Act Funding and Subsidiary Projects
The funding is allocated under the CHIPS Research and Development Office Broad Agency Announcement pursuant to the CHIPS Act. The capital supports three distinct research and development projects executed through Rigetti's wholly owned subsidiary, Rigetti & Co, LLC.
According to the Investing.com coverage, the technical initiatives focus on hardware bottlenecks in quantum scaling:
- Compressing readout electronics into an integrated, miniaturized package.
- Expanding cryogenic capacity by orders of magnitude via a new cryostat architecture.
- Developing advanced fabrication capabilities for high-connectivity chip architectures.
Government Equity Stake and Ownership Structure
As a condition of the award, the Department of Commerce will receive a minority, non-controlling equity stake in Rigetti, according to a subsequent Investing.com report. This equity arrangement mirrors federal structuring seen in other critical technology and energy infrastructure awards under the CHIPS Act and recent industrial policy legislation, aligning public sector investment with domestic hardware manufacturing goals.
What Is at Stake for Quantum Computing
The multi-million-dollar injection addresses fundamental engineering hurdles required to build fault-tolerant quantum systems. By targeting miniaturized readout electronics and high-capacity cryostats, the Department of Commerce funding aims to reduce the physical footprint and thermal load of large-scale quantum processors while expanding domestic manufacturing capacity for specialized semiconductor components.
