Apple has officially entered the foldable phone market with the launch of the $1,999 iPhone Duo, pushing its flagship lineup further upmarket during John Ternus's inaugural product event as chief executive. The device represents a departure from traditional smartphone pricing models, establishing a new ultra-premium tier as according to an Investing.com report shares responded positively on the public markets.

“iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” said John Ternus, Chief Executive Officer, Apple, in a statement regarding the release.

Specifications and Hardware Architecture

The newly unveiled device features a 7.6-inch inner flexible display paired with a 5.4-inch outer screen. Under the hood, the hardware is driven by Apple's A20 Pro chip, paired with configurations extending up to 2 terabytes of storage capacity. The software ecosystem runs on iOS 27, supporting split-view multitasking capabilities designed to take advantage of the dual-screen configuration.

Besides the core hardware, a USA Today report noted that an Apple Pencil with USB-C support compatible with either display will roll out later this year. This stylus addition marks a functional bridge between the company's tablet and smartphone accessories.

Pricing, Tiers, and Availability Timeline

Starting at $1,999, the iPhone Duo stands as the most expensive standard-line smartphone ever released by the company. Pre-orders for the device are scheduled to begin on October 16, with commercial availability commencing on October 23 across more than 70 countries and regions worldwide.

Market Response and Trading Data

Following the hardware announcements at the product event, Apple shares (NASDAQ: AAPL) closed up 3.56% at $326.57, according to Finnhub market data.

Strategic Implications for the Premium Mobile Market

The introduction of a $1,999 foldable device reflects a broader industry push to capture high-net-worth consumers through differentiated hardware form factors. By establishing this category, Apple enters direct competition with established foldable manufacturers while testing consumer price elasticity at the ultra-premium tier.
