OpenAI reported an annualized revenue run rate of nearly $50 billion for September, trailing earlier projections of up to $70 billion as artificial intelligence leaders standardize financial reporting ahead of public market debuts. The lower figure reflects distinct accounting adjustments rather than a sudden deceleration in business activity, according to a Reuters report.
The revised calculation brings the company's financial disclosures into closer alignment with industry peers, offering investors a clearer baseline as both OpenAI and rival firms prepare for initial public offerings.
"The discrepancy mainly arose from an attempt to produce a direct comparison with figures from rival Anthropic," according to the Reuters report.
Revenue Recognition and Cloud Partner Mechanics
The gap between OpenAI's earlier $70 billion indication and the $50 billion September run rate stems from how top-line sales are recognized across distribution channels. OpenAI excludes revenue generated through sales via major cloud partners such as Amazon Web Services and Alphabet's Google Cloud from its primary run rate calculations.
In contrast, rival Anthropic accounts for partner-channeled sales differently, paying cloud partners approximately 16% of every dollar earned through their platforms. These divergent accounting treatments complicate direct head-to-head comparisons of top-line growth between the two private AI developers.
Rapid Growth Amid Competitive Pressures
Despite the downward revision, OpenAI's growth trajectory remains substantial over a multi-year horizon. The company began the year with $20 billion in annualized revenue, which itself marked an expansion from $6 billion in total revenue during 2024.
Financial metrics from recent quarters underscore the intensifying rivalry in the generative AI sector. During the second quarter, OpenAI reported $6.7 billion in revenue, which was eclipsed by Anthropic at $11.5 billion for the same period. Additionally, Anthropic's annualized revenue surpassed $65 billion in July and is projected by market trackers to reach $100 billion by the end of the year.
What the IPO Preparations Mean for AI Markets
The push toward standardized revenue reporting highlights the maturation of the foundational AI sector as its leading participants transition from private research labs to publicly traded corporations. With billions in infrastructure investments required to train and deploy frontier models, scrutiny over accounting practices, partnership revenue shares, and true run rates will remain central to how public markets evaluate valuations for enterprise AI providers.
