Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, intends to intervene in local equity markets during periods of volatility if asset valuations align with its investment criteria. The fund manages a global portfolio and aims to use its capital to stabilize market sentiment when it determines that downturns result from temporary external factors instead of fundamental economic shifts.

"If there is crisis in the market, and we feel that it’s just based on some external sentiments that are just very temporary ... then we might step in," said Rani Piputri, head of public investment at Danantara Investment Management, in a Reuters report.

Current Portfolio and Capital Deployment

Danantara’s public investment division has deployed approximately $3 billion into domestic and international stocks and bonds. The fund maintains an asset allocation weighted toward equities, which comprise 65% of its holdings. The remaining portfolio consists of 30% in fixed income and 5% in hedge funds, with 25% of the total book invested within Indonesia.

The fund plans to deploy an additional $1 billion by the end of 2026. This expansion occurs as the institution manages its relationship with the Indonesian government, including discussions with Finance Minister Suahasil regarding whether the fund will retain a 120 trillion rupiah ($6.7 billion) dividend payment previously earmarked for the government treasury.

Balancing Intervention and Market Governance

While the prospect of a state-backed entity entering the market during a selloff may raise concerns regarding government interference, Danantara officials state that their primary objective is to maintain market integrity and encourage institutional stability.

"We believe our role should ensure that whatever we do, foreign investors will not look at it as some sort of market intervention but rather a way for us to continue to contribute to the financial deepening (and) better governance," said Pahala Mansury, managing director of global relations and communications at Danantara Indonesia.

For investors, the fund's strategy represents a shift in how Indonesia manages state-controlled capital. By defining the conditions under which it might provide liquidity to the market, Danantara is signaling a commitment to long-term value investing. The fund's ability to execute this strategy depends on its continued autonomy in managing capital reserves and the ongoing negotiations regarding its dividend obligations to the state.
