Prediction market startup Kalshi has launched a perpetual future tracking the US 500 index. This strategic shift aims to transition the company into a full-service financial exchange. The new contract offers traders leveraged exposure to 500 of the largest U.S. companies without the expiration constraints of traditional futures.
"Stock market exposure is the next step towards Kalshi becoming a full-service financial exchange, and perps are the best way for our traders to get this exposure," said CEO Tarek Mansour in a statement regarding the launch.
Understanding Perpetual Futures
Standard futures contracts have a set expiration date and require traders to roll over their positions into a new contract to maintain exposure. Perpetual futures, or perps, allow for indefinite holding periods. This structure simplifies long-term trading strategies by removing the need to manage contract maturity dates.
To ensure the price of the perpetual contract remains tethered to the spot price of the underlying US 500 index, the platform utilizes a funding rate mechanism. This is a periodic fee exchanged directly between traders holding long positions and those holding short positions. When the contract price trades at a premium to the index, long traders typically pay a fee to short traders. If the contract trades at a discount, short traders pay the long side. This constant adjustment incentivizes the contract price to track the index closely.
Strategic Expansion Plans
This launch marks Kalshi's entry into traditional financial derivatives, moving beyond its established focus on event contracts. The company is reportedly working to diversify its offerings. Plans are currently underway to file for a perpetual West Texas Intermediate crude oil contract with U.S. regulators.
By integrating these instruments, Kalshi aims to compete with established financial exchanges that offer broader asset classes. The move reflects a trend among fintech platforms to capture market share by offering simplified, perpetual access to mainstream indices and commodities for retail and institutional participants.
