Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek is raising at least 80 billion yuan, equivalent to $12 billion, in a financing round led by Tencent Holdings and battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology, according to a Bloomberg report. The capital injection surpasses an initial target of 50 billion yuan, and the final total could climb as high as 100 billion yuan, providing the heavily backed firm with financial resources for domestic hardware expansion ahead of a planned public debut.
Prior to the Bloomberg report detailing the upsized $12 billion round, earlier estimates had placed DeepSeek's valuation at approximately $74 billion.
Hardware Expansion in Inner Mongolia
A central focus of the fresh capital is an infrastructure buildout utilizing domestic hardware. According to a Ground News report, DeepSeek plans to deploy at least 160,000 Huawei Technologies accelerators at a specialized data center located in Inner Mongolia.
This hardware strategy builds on previous financial backing, which included a 10 billion yuan investment from Tencent. By relying on Huawei accelerators rather than restricted Western alternatives, the startup is positioning its infrastructure around domestic technology supply chains.
Corporate Restructuring and IPO Timeline
Following the completion of the funding round, DeepSeek expects to execute a corporate restructuring to prepare for an initial public offering targeted for early 2027, according to Ground News.
Founded by Liang Wenfeng, DeepSeek gained international prominence with the release of its open-source R1 model in early 2025. The company subsequently rolled out its flagship V4 models to compete directly against Western AI developers such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
What the Funding Means for the AI Market
The capital raise highlights the financial commitments required to scale frontier artificial intelligence models outside the United States. With industrial backers like Tencent and CATL securing stakes, DeepSeek is positioned to accelerate its compute capacity in Inner Mongolia and its corporate transition toward public markets over the next twelve months.
