JPMorgan upgraded Glencore Plc to Overweight from Neutral and raised its price target to GBP7.30 from GBP5.10, citing anticipated production growth in copper and improved marketing earnings guidance. The rating change reflects a shift in market sentiment following several years of output declines across the mining giant's asset portfolio.
"JPMorgan upgraded Glencore Plc to Overweight from Neutral and raised its price target to GBP7.30 from GBP5.10," according to an Investing.com report.
Copper Production Outlook to 2030
The upgrade rests heavily on a forecasted 30% jump in copper production by 2030. According to the research data, this expansion will be driven largely by brownfield projects rather than greenfield developments, lowering the capital expenditure risk typically associated with new mine construction.
Brownfield expansions utilize existing infrastructure, processing plants, and transport networks. This operational strategy allows mining companies to ramp up output more rapidly and at a lower cost per ton compared to developing virgin deposits in remote locations.
Marketing EBIT Framework and Guidance
Alongside the copper growth trajectory, Glencore lifted its long-term Marketing EBIT guidance. The mid-point target rose to $3.5 billion, up from $2.9 billion previously.
Management also introduced a transparent reporting framework. This structure links trading earnings directly to inventory levels and prevailing funding costs, giving market participants clearer visibility into cash generation.
Valuation and Peer Comparison
In public markets, Glencore trades at 6.3 times estimated 2026 enterprise value to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EV/EBITDA). The multiple compresses to 5.0 times for estimated 2027 figures.
By comparison, major peers trade at different valuations:
- Rio Tinto and BHP: Both trade at over 6 times estimated EV/EBITDA.
- Anglo American and Teck Resources: Both trade at approximately 8 times estimated EV/EBITDA.
Secondary ASX Listing Plans
Corporate developments also include a scheduled secondary listing on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), set to commence on October 14, 2026. The listing aims to enhance Glencore's profile among Australian institutional and retail investors while improving trading liquidity.
The ASX entry will occur without any capital raising or issuance of new shares, meaning existing equity holders will not experience dilution from the move.
What the Upgrade Means for Investors
The analyst action highlights a recalibration among financial institutions regarding cyclical commodity producers with clear decarbonization-linked metal exposure. Copper remains a foundational element in electrical grids, electric vehicles, and renewable energy infrastructure, drawing sustained institutional interest despite broader macroeconomic headwinds in industrial manufacturing.
