JPMorgan Chase has appointed former Goldman Sachs executive Rob Sweeney as a global chair of investment banking. The bank intends to capture market share as corporate dealmaking rebounds. This hire follows a talent acquisition drive as the institution prepares for a recovery in capital markets activity.

"In the role, Sweeney will advise major corporate clients, particularly in the consumer and retail sector, and work with senior bankers on key relationships. He will also help lead the bank’s efforts around its security and resilience initiatives," said Filippo Gori and John Simmons, co-heads of global banking, in a statement regarding the appointment.

Scaling the Coverage Teams

Sweeney previously held senior roles at Goldman Sachs and the private equity firm Sycamore Partners. He joins JPMorgan during a period of headcount growth. According to a Reuters report, the bank has hired more than 1,000 bankers globally this year. This expansion supports coverage teams across industries and geographic regions to assist a broader array of corporate clients.

Financial Performance and Market Context

The bank’s investment banking division recorded momentum throughout 2026. During the second quarter, JPMorgan reported a 30% increase in investment banking fees compared to the same period in 2025. This performance represents the highest fee revenue level for the division since 2021, reflecting an uptick in global M&A and underwriting activity.

As of the market close on October 9, 2026, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) shares were priced at $332.99.

What Is at Stake for Investment Banking

JPMorgan is focused on maintaining its lead while deal complexity rises. By integrating dealmakers like Sweeney, the firm aims to deepen its relationships with consumer and retail corporations that are navigating shifting consumer demand and supply chain pressures. The focus on client advisory and internal security initiatives reflects an industry trend of prioritizing operational stability alongside growth in banking services.
