India's Central Consumer Protection Authority has escalated its inquiry into Apple's software warranty terms, targeting company policies regarding hardware malfunctions linked to the late-2024 iOS 18 update.

The regulatory escalation follows user complaints alleging that software updates triggered display anomalies, such as vertical colored lines, alongside microphone failures, leaving customers with substantial repair costs due to a lack of software warranties.

"Charging consumers for issues arising from the company's own negligence violates the principle of fair trade," the CCPA told Apple in its regulatory notice.

Apple's Defense and Industry Standards

In an August 20 response to the CCPA notice, Apple maintained that providing no warranty on software aligns with global industry norms and mirrors practices adopted by major electronics competitors like Samsung and Sony.

The tech giant argued that forcing companies to treat every software glitch as an absolute warranty breach would essentially convert software providers into insurers against all technological risk. Apple also noted that the inquiry stemmed from a sample of 75 consumer complaints, pointing out that only about 11% of active iPhones in the country operated on iOS 18 by June 2026.

Potential Regulatory Outcomes

Legal analysts point out that any intervention by Indian authorities into core warranty structures would mark a departure from standard enforcement patterns.

"Where contractual terms or warranty conditions form part of the alleged unfair practice, the CCPA can ask the company to ensure accurate information be provided to its customers," said Kirti Mahapatra, a New Delhi-based lawyer specialising in consumer laws. "It can also ask for changes to such terms, but that would be unprecedented."

Growth in India's Smartphone Market

The regulatory friction unfolds as Apple expands its footprint in an expanding market. According to Counterpoint Research data, iPhones captured a 9% market share in India last year, marking a steady rise from 4% in 2022 as the company increases local manufacturing and retail presence.
