India's wholesale price inflation accelerated to 9.92% year-on-year in August, driven by surging energy and food costs that outpaced economists' forecasts and intensified cost pressures across domestic markets. According to an Investing.com report, the figure rose from a 9.78% increase a month earlier and exceeded the average projection of 9.89% among surveyed analysts.
Fuel and Food Costs Drive Index Higher
The acceleration was led by sharp gains in the fuel and power segment, which increased 22.93% year-on-year in August compared to a 20.05% rise in July. Within that category, petroleum and natural gas prices jumped 34.41%, compounding a 26.99% rise from the previous month.
Wholesale food prices also maintained upward momentum, rising 7.05% year-on-year in August compared to 6.65% in July. Meanwhile, prices for manufactured products increased 8.37% following an 8.29% rise a month prior, reflecting broader pass-through costs in the industrial sector.
Producer Price Index Trends
Alongside the headline wholesale inflation data, producer prices in India rose 9.8% year-on-year in August, up from a 9.57% increase in the preceding month. The persistent rise in input costs highlights ongoing macro-economic pressures facing domestic manufacturers as raw material and energy expenses continue to climb.
