Huber Research double-downgraded Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) to Underweight from Overweight and cut its 12-month price target to $70 from $85, citing slowing per-subscriber engagement growth, potential headcount reductions, and limited room for further U.S. price hikes.

The downgrade highlights growing scrutiny over how streaming giants maintain top-line momentum as subscriber bases mature and competition for consumer attention intensifies across global digital entertainment markets.

"An acquisition approach would likely be seen by the market (and us) as Netflix needing to do a large deal in order to maintain its leading position," said Craig Huber, analyst at Huber Research, in a note to clients.

Metrics Behind the Double-Downgrade

The research firm pointed to underlying streaming usage metrics that show slowing momentum when measured relative to subscriber growth. According to the Huber Research report, global viewing hours rose 2% to 97 billion in the first half of 2026. However, Huber estimates that this aggregate increase actually represents a decline of about 5% on a per-subscriber basis.

In addition to engagement trends, the analyst cited press reports indicating that Netflix is preparing to cut its headcount by 5%. The last significant layoffs at the streaming company occurred in the second quarter of 2022, a period that followed two consecutive quarters of subscriber losses.

Reporting Frequency Changes and M&A Speculation

The downgrade also touches on corporate transparency and strategic optionality. Netflix plans to shift from publishing its biannual engagement reports twice a year to an annual schedule starting in the first quarter of 2027.

Huber's note warned that any future large-scale merger or acquisition activity by management would signal defensive positioning rather than opportunistic expansion. The lower $70 price target reflects these compressed growth multiples and potential cost pressures as the streaming platform approaches saturation in key domestic markets.
