HSBC is cutting up to 70% of financial advisers and half of management roles in its UK wealth division, pairing digital automation with a sharp reversal from prior hiring expansions.
"HSBC UK is a long-established, leading UK wealth manager and premium banking provider," the bank said in a statement to Reuters. "We're continuing to evolve to deliver more digitally enabled products and journeys to support our best-in-class wealth service and meet the changing needs of our customers."
Consultation Period and October Timeline
Under the proposed restructuring, affected employees face a consultation period, with departures anticipated by the end of October. The reductions dismantle a portion of the workforce assembled during a hiring drive launched two years ago to scale up the bank's UK wealth and private banking operations.
Management and specialist roles will take an estimated 50% reduction, while cuts among financial advisers will reach approximately 70%, according to details reported by Euronext.
Executive Strategy on Generative AI
The workforce reduction aligns with Chief Executive Georges Elhedery's integration of artificial intelligence across the global banking group. In May, Elhedery addressed investors during a corporate strategy day regarding technological displacement.
"Generative AI will destroy certain jobs," said Georges Elhedery, Chief Executive, HSBC, during an investor day event, adding that staff must embrace AI-driven change rather than resist it.
Market Valuation and Financial Data
In the public markets, HSBC HOLDINGS PLC-SPONS ADR (HSBC) traded at $92.98, representing a 0.40% increase from its previous close of $92.61, according to Finnhub market data as of October 9, 2026.
What the Restructuring Means for Retail Banking
The shift at HSBC illustrates a transformation among global financial institutions attempting to lower operational costs by substituting traditional advisory and middle-management roles with automated digital platforms.
