The Reserve Bank of India raised its benchmark repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on Wednesday, marking its first interest rate hike since February 2023 in response to accelerating price pressures and a weakening rupee.
"It is clear that inflation and its outlook are not benign, as they were last year," said RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra.
Inflation Metrics and Policy Stance
Retail inflation in India touched 4.8% in August, remaining above the central bank's medium-term target of 4% for 10 straight months, according to a CNBC report. This persistent elevation prompted the Monetary Policy Committee to alter its policy framework.
"The MPC also decided to change the stance to calibrated tightening," Malhotra said, adding that "given the current conditions, rate cuts are off the table in the near term, and policy action ahead can only be a rate hike or a pause."
What Lies Ahead for Borrowing Costs
Financial institutions expect further monetary tightening before the end of the year. Both HSBC and Goldman Sachs anticipate that the central bank will raise interest rates again at the December policy meeting.
The shift comes as emerging market central banks navigate persistent global energy shocks, currency depreciation pressures, and domestic supply constraints that keep consumer price indexes elevated above mandated targets.
