Blackstone-backed AirTrunk is committing an additional $1 billion to its Inzai campus in Japan to deploy advanced liquid-cooling technology and support surging artificial intelligence workloads amid rising regional demand, according to an Investing.com report.
The fresh capital injection expands the operator's hyperscale data centre footprint in Japan, where facility capacity is designed to scale past 300 megawatts. This capital allocation comes as cloud providers and enterprise tech companies aggressively expand infrastructure to handle intensive machine learning tasks that traditional air-cooling systems struggle to support.
"Due to geopolitical reasons, we are seeing more and more customers looking to Japan from a North Asian perspective," said Robin Khuda, Chief Executive Officer, AirTrunk, in a statement regarding the expansion.
Scaling AI Infrastructure Across Asia
The new funding targets the integration of liquid-cooling mechanisms across server racks, a thermal management technique becoming standard as high-density AI accelerators generate unprecedented heat loads. By pumping cooling fluid directly to or near processing chips, facilities can operate dense server clusters more efficiently than conventional air-chilled setups.
Industry executives point to shifting regulatory environments and power constraints in Western markets as catalysts for the geographic pivot. AirTrunk leadership highlights that building large-scale compute hubs faces mounting hurdles in established Western nodes.
"Deploying AI infrastructure will get harder in the US, is already hard in Europe, making Asia a 'big beneficiary'," said Robin Khuda, Chief Executive Officer, AirTrunk, in the report.
Blackstone Market Valuation and Context
Behind the expansion is private equity giant Blackstone Inc. (NYSE: BX), which acquired a majority stake in AirTrunk to capture growth in global digital infrastructure. In public market trading as of 2026-10-09, Blackstone shares closed at $114.29, marking a 1.43% increase from the previous close of $112.68, according to Finnhub market data.
The investment underscores how private equity sponsors are deploying capital directly into physical compute assets. Data centre operators are securing long-term power purchase agreements and real estate to service contracted hyperscale tenants before grid bottlenecks restrict further industry expansion.
What the Inzai Campus Expansion Means
The Inzai campus sits in a primary data centre cluster outside Tokyo, offering fiber connectivity and stable power access required for uninterrupted enterprise cloud operations. As generative AI adoption scales across Asia-Pacific enterprises, operators are racing to deliver liquid-cooled capacities capable of housing next-generation graphic processing units without triggering local thermal or electrical overloads.
