Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has secured a $56 million U.S. Navy contract to provide engineering and design support for the AUKUS submarine program. This trilateral security pact includes Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The deal, awarded to the company's Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division, focuses on the early-stage development of nuclear-powered submarine capabilities.
"Our longstanding nuclear experience at NNS directly benefits the AUKUS mission to support shared security objectives. We are honoured to leverage that experience and contribute even more to the AUKUS partnership," said Bryan Caccavale, NNS vice president of program management, in a statement.
Contract Scope and Duration
The agreement is slated to run through September 2027. The contract includes an option that would extend the timeline to September 2028 and increase the total value of the award to $91 million, according to a report from Naval Technology.
The work is concentrated in the United States. Approximately 88% of the engineering and design tasks will be delivered from the NNS facility in Newport News, Virginia. The remaining 12% of the project work is designated for various foreign sites, reflecting the collaborative nature of the AUKUS agreement.
Context for AUKUS
The AUKUS program aims to provide the Royal Australian Navy with conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines. As the only U.S. shipyard capable of building both nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines, Newport News Shipbuilding acts as a technical partner in the alliance.
By focusing on the design and engineering phase, HII is assisting in the foundational requirements for the construction and integration of these vessels. This contract reflects the shift toward collaborative defense manufacturing, where the U.S. industrial base provides technical expertise to support the maritime security goals of its allies.
