France's industrial production contracted by 0.4% in July. This result missed economist expectations and highlights a slowdown in the second-largest economy in the Eurozone. The decline differs from the 0.2% monthly increase forecast by economists surveyed by Reuters.
Manufacturing and Sector Performance
The contraction was pronounced within the manufacturing sector, where output dropped 0.8% during the month. Although industrial production gained 0.8% on a year-over-year basis, the manufacturing sub-sector declined 0.4% compared to July 2025.
Understanding Output Trends
To gauge the health of the sector, analysts look at three-month moving averages. These figures reveal the following for French industry:
- Manufacturing output: Experienced a 1.2% decrease over the three-month period.
- Industrial production: Posted a 0.3% increase over the same three-month window.
What Is at Stake for the Eurozone
The data acts as a barometer for the economic health of the Eurozone, where industrial performance influences central bank policy. As the manufacturing sector struggles, the difference between industrial output and service-sector activity affects market sentiment regarding potential interest rate adjustments by the European Central Bank.
For policymakers, the weakness in manufacturing output relative to the broader industrial index underscores structural challenges for French producers. These figures are incorporated into quarterly GDP estimates to determine if the current industrial sluggishness is a temporary fluctuation or an entrenched trend in the French economy.
