Boeing has reached a tentative four-year contract agreement with its engineering union. This move could avert a strike while the aerospace manufacturer works through certification delays for its 737 MAX 10 and 777-9 aircraft.
The agreement covers approximately 17,000 members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) and arrives before the current contract expires on October 6. If the membership does not ratify the proposal by that date, the union would have been positioned to authorize a strike, which could have halted engineering work on key production lines.
"Our final contract offer addresses the top priorities identified by our employees and SPEEA’s bargaining teams, including an immediate wage increase and larger wage pools with guarantees," said Ben Nimmergut, Boeing’s vice president and functional chief engineer for production engineering.
Wage Structure and Contract Terms
Under the proposed deal, engineers would receive an immediate 10% wage increase on October 16. The contract outlines a structure of 4% annual raises, supplemented by merit-based increases that extend through 2030.
Union leadership signaled a willingness to accept the terms, though they acknowledged the proposal may not satisfy every demand. In a statement, the SPEEA negotiating team noted the deal does not include everything they requested, but it represents a step toward improving pay and work lives and rebuilding the relationship between Boeing leadership and union members.
Operational Impact
Securing labor stability is a primary objective for Boeing as it faces pressure to clear regulatory hurdles. The company is currently managing certification delays for its 737 MAX 10 and the long-range 777-9 aircraft. Any interruption in engineering support could have hampered the company's ability to meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements and deliver on its current aircraft backlog.
Financial Context
Boeing (BA) shares were trading at $210.62 as of September 15, 2026. The labor agreement arrives as the company attempts to stabilize its balance sheet and production output following a period of operational challenges and supply chain disruptions.
