Quantum BioPharma has partnered with Thermo Fisher Scientific's clinical research business to launch a Phase 2 clinical trial for its lead multiple sclerosis drug, Lucid-MS, following regulatory clearance from federal health authorities.

The collaboration marks a key operational milestone for the biotechnology firm as it advances its proprietary compound into mid-stage patient testing. The partnership utilizes Thermo Fisher's PPD clinical research business to oversee study start-up activities and site coordination for the upcoming evaluation.

"Following FDA clearance to proceed with the Phase 2 study, initiating study start-up activities with a leading global CRO with extensive CNS and MS experience represents an important next step," said Zeeshan Saeed, Chief Executive Officer of Quantum BioPharma, in a statement regarding the agreement.

Trial Design and Patient Evaluation

The upcoming evaluation is structured as a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study designed to assess the safety, tolerability, and clinical efficacy of the treatment candidate, formally designated as Lucid-21-302. Researchers will focus on patients diagnosed with progressive forms of multiple sclerosis, a population with limited therapeutic options that halt neurodegeneration.

Traditional therapies focus primarily on suppressing immune system activity, whereas the candidate takes a distinct pharmacological path.

"The drug is designed around a novel neuroprotective approach that targets demyelination rather than solely modulating the immune system," said Andrzej Chruscinski, President of Scientific and Clinical Affairs at Quantum BioPharma.

Understanding Demyelination in Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system where the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers. This myelin loss disrupts electrical impulse transmission between the brain and the body, leading to cumulative neurological disability.

Existing disease-modifying therapies primarily attempt to suppress or alter the immune response to reduce relapse frequency, while neuroprotective agents aim to preserve nerve cells directly or promote remyelination. By targeting the underlying structural degradation of nerve pathways rather than just immune inflammation, researchers hope to alter the long-term trajectory of progressive multiple sclerosis.

What Is at Stake for Clinical Development

The execution of the trial through a major contract research organization allows Quantum BioPharma to scale its operational capacity as it navigates mid-stage clinical development. The success of the trial will depend on patient recruitment rates and safety data gathered across the participating clinical sites under Thermo Fisher's management.
