Citi expects limited upward momentum for the EUR/JPY currency pair as Japanese monetary authorities prepare to intervene around the ¥160 per dollar threshold. This potential currency defense campaign creates structural headwinds for cross-yen positions as Tokyo targets a stronger yen valuation.
Foreign exchange markets are closely monitoring Tokyo's shifting policy stance amid persistent weakness in the Japanese currency. Historical intervention precedents demonstrate that Japanese authorities will commit substantial reserves to curb rapid depreciation phases when dollar-yen exchange rates approach key psychological and technical barriers.
Forecasts for EUR/JPY and AUD/JPY Crosses
According to an Investing.com report, Citi projects that the EUR/JPY exchange rate could decline to approximately ¥170 per euro next year. The financial institution notes this downward target could materialize sooner if European market turmoil intensifies or regional economic conditions deteriorate.
In addition to euro-yen projections, Citi cautioned that the Australian dollar-yen cross (AUD/JPY) faces similar downward pressure. Analysts at the firm estimate the AUD/JPY cross could potentially drop to around ¥105 per Australian dollar as intervention risks weigh on high-yielding currency pairs funded through yen borrowing.
Mechanics of Japanese Currency Intervention
Currency market intervention by the Japanese Ministry of Finance typically involves direct purchases of Japanese yen funded by selling foreign currency reserves held by the Bank of Japan. These official operations aim to disrupt speculative short-selling patterns and smooth out disorderly exchange rate movements that could harm domestic purchasing power and import costs.
Citi's analysis highlights that active defense of the yen against the U.S. dollar inevitably spills over into crosses like EUR/JPY and AUD/JPY. When authorities successfully drive the USD/JPY rate below ¥155, the resulting strengthening ripple effects revalue the yen broadly against major trading currencies.
What Is at Stake for Forex Traders
Traders maintaining leveraged carry trade positions funded in Japanese yen face heightened volatility as intervention risks materialize. The prospect of concerted intervention near ¥160 per dollar forces market participants to reevaluate risk parameters across multiple G10 currency crosses, shifting focus away from yield differentials toward policy defense levels.
