Chewy Inc. (NYSE: CHWY) shares faced downward pressure after a report from Investing.com detailed a rating downgrade by JPMorgan from Overweight to Neutral, alongside a price target reduction to $24 from $29. The adjustment demonstrates how broader macroeconomic challenges continue to squeeze discretionary spending and organic expansion for the online pet retailer.

"Chewy shares dropped 9% following its earnings report as organic growth remains under pressure from ongoing macro headwinds," said Doug Anmuth, analyst at JPMorgan, in a note to clients.

Q2 Performance and Customer Metrics

Despite the overarching category headwinds cited by analysts, Chewy demonstrated relative resilience during the second quarter. According to the Investing.com coverage, the company outperformed the broader pet care category by approximately 2 to 3 times.

Financial metrics from the period highlight several operational movements:

  • Active Customers: Delivered quarter-over-quarter net additions of 208,000 customers.
  • Acquisition Detail: The customer additions figure included 43,000 acquired SmartPak customers.
  • Profitability: Adjusted EBITDA margin reached 6.8%, beating prior company guidance of 6.3% to 6.4%.

Understanding Gross Margin Drivers

While the second-quarter adjusted EBITDA margin exceeded expectations, analysts noted that the upside required closer examination. The beat was driven almost entirely by approximately $15 million in timing-related and discrete gross margin benefits rather than purely sustained structural expansion.

Such discrete benefits often stem from temporary supply chain adjustments, inventory accounting shifts, or one-off vendor rebates. For equity analysts evaluating retail margins, separating these timing-related windfalls from core operational profitability is critical when assessing future earnings durability.

Market Response and Trading Data

In public market trading as of September 14, 2026, Chewy shares stood at $21.35, marking a 4.45% increase from a previous close of $20.44, according to Finnhub market data.

The divergence between the JPMorgan downgrade and the daily stock movement highlights the complex tug-of-war between long-term macro caution and short-term valuation adjustments in retail equities.
