Meta Platforms shares fell 4.2% to $720.36 on Monday, pressured by anticipated competition from OpenAI's rumored "o" assistant and broader scrutiny over technology capital expenditures. The pullback follows an extended market rally driven by heavy artificial intelligence investments and product rollouts.

"It is actually quite clear personal superintelligence will not only come first; it will be much bigger and more important. So we have shifted our focus to building the best devices for personal superintelligence," said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, speaking at Meta Connect on September 24, according to an Investing.com report.

Enterprise Expansion and Executive Departures

Alongside consumer-facing developments, Meta launched its new Meta Enterprise Platform and appointed former MongoDB CEO Chirantan "CJ" Desai as Chief Enterprise Platform Officer. The executive transition prompted an 18% intraday decline in MongoDB shares, which dropped to $336.79 following the announcement.

Meta's consumer AI agent, Muse, has accumulated over 3.4 million downloads since its September 8 launch, temporarily surpassing ChatGPT in the U.S. App Store. Market data from Finnhub shows META PLATFORMS INC-CLASS A (META) trading at $728.08, up 0.30% with a previous close of $725.93 as of October 2, 2026.

Capex Scrutiny and Financial Projections

The market pullback also reflects growing investor tension regarding infrastructure spending across the technology sector. Goldman Sachs analysts questioned the near-term return on investment for Meta's expanding capital expenditure budget, which is projected to reach between $130 billion and $145 billion for the full fiscal year.
