JD Wetherspoon shares surged over 8% after the British pub operator reported strong recent sales that boosted its profit outlook, helping to offset a 28% drop in annual profit caused by rising operating costs.

Like-for-like sales rose 8.6% in the nine weeks to Sept. 27, supported by warmer weather conditions that drew customers to the chain's beer gardens and establishments across the United Kingdom.

"The company has made a sound start to the current financial year," said Tim Martin, Chairman of JD Wetherspoon, in a statement regarding the results.

Annual Profit and Cost Pressures

The strong start to the new trading period follows a challenging previous financial year marked by persistent inflationary pressures. JD Wetherspoon reported pre-tax profit before separately disclosed items of £58.6 million for the 52 weeks ended July 26, representing a 28% decline from £81.4 million recorded a year earlier.

Operating costs across the hospitality sector have remained elevated, driven by increases in labor wages, food supplies, and utility bills. These expenses squeezed profit margins throughout the previous fiscal period, even as customer footfall showed signs of recovery following pandemic-era disruptions.

Market Forecasts and Consensus Expectations

Despite the historical profit decline, investors responded favorably to management's updated guidance, which indicated that full-year performance is expected to meet broader market forecasts.

Company-compiled consensus estimates point toward a recovery in underlying profitability, placing the 2027 financial-year profit on a comparable basis at £74 million. This projected rebound reflects confidence that sustained sales momentum can help absorb ongoing cost inflation within the British pub and restaurant industry.
