Wedbush downgraded Foghorn Therapeutics (FHTX) to Neutral from Outperform and reduced its price target from $10.00 to $2.00 after the company discontinued its lead drug candidate, FHD-909. This change follows a failure in Phase 1 clinical trials, which forced the firm to restructure its operations and focus on its wholly-owned pipeline.
Foghorn and partner Eli Lilly terminated their collaboration on the SMARCA2 degrader after clinical data indicated that the SMARCA2/4 synthetic lethality biology failed to achieve the efficacy thresholds necessary for dose expansion. This development changes the outlook for the biotech firm, which previously positioned the program as a primary component of its therapeutic development.
Operational Restructuring and Workforce Cuts
In response to the clinical failure, Foghorn is implementing a 40% workforce reduction to lower operating expenses and prioritize internal assets. The company stated that these measures are intended to preserve capital as it navigates the loss of its primary collaborative program.
"The decision to discontinue FHD-909 and restructure the organization reflects a necessary shift to preserve capital and focus on our remaining wholly-owned pipeline," the company indicated in its announcement regarding the strategic pivot.
Impact on Financial Runway
Despite the reduction in personnel and the loss of the Eli Lilly partnership, the restructuring efforts have extended Foghorn's projected cash runway. The company now expects to maintain operations through the second half of 2029, an improvement over its previous guidance of the first half of 2028.
This downgrade by Wedbush aligns with downward revisions from Guggenheim, Stifel, TD Cowen, and Citizens. These analysts suggest that the loss of the FHD-909 program alters the company's valuation profile.
What Is at Stake for Investors
The company now relies on its ability to advance its remaining proprietary programs without the capital support and validation previously provided by the Eli Lilly partnership. The shift from a collaborative development model to a lean, wholly-owned focus is an attempt to extend liquidity while proving the viability of its underlying technology platform without its lead candidate.
