Walmart is expanding its healthcare footprint by launching co-branded Medicare Advantage plans in partnership with a nonprofit insurer. This move mirrors a strategy recently adopted by rival Costco to capture the senior demographic. The new plans will be available to more than 2 million Medicare enrollees across two states when the annual open enrollment period begins on October 15, according to a report by Quartz.

Medicare Advantage plans are private alternatives to traditional Medicare that typically serve individuals age 65 and older. These plans provide medical coverage with lower out-of-pocket costs, and they carry premiums that average roughly $14 per month, according to data cited by The Independent.

Strategic Expansion Into Senior Healthcare

Walmart's entry into the space follows an initiative by Costco, which also partnered with the nonprofit SCAN Group to offer Medicare Advantage plans in two states and a supplemental plan in a third. Both retailers are using the brand trust they hold among the baby boomer generation to gain traction in the insurance market.

"We're trying to create a win-win. Something that was going to be good for seniors, good for SCAN and good for Costco," said Sachin H. Jain, CEO of SCAN Health Plan, in a statement to Yahoo Finance.

Understanding Medicare Advantage Mechanisms

Medicare Advantage plans, also known as Medicare Part C, allow private insurance companies to manage benefits for beneficiaries. These plans often bundle hospital, medical, and prescription drug coverage into a single package. For retailers like Walmart and Costco, the partnership model allows them to integrate their physical retail presence and pharmacy services with the insurer's clinical network.

What Is at Stake for Retailers

The shift toward health insurance distribution marks an evolution in the retail business model. By embedding themselves into the healthcare journey of seniors, retailers aim to increase customer loyalty and foot traffic at their physical locations. As the U.S. population ages, the competition for the Medicare Advantage market has intensified, with major retailers viewing the sector as a growth lever for their pharmacy and wellness segments.
