Optimi Health is preparing to launch a Health Canada-authorized Phase 3 clinical trial for MDMA-assisted therapy to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study is scheduled to begin in 2027. This trial expands the company's clinical pipeline by targeting a cohort of up to 100 participants, including military veterans and frontline workers like police, firefighters, paramedics, and healthcare professionals.
"On the heels of announcing our Phase 2 trial of natural psilocybin for the treatment of major depressive disorder, we are preparing to advance our synthetic MDMA into an approved Phase 3 trial in PTSD, with the goal of submitting both products for registration," said Dane Stevens, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Optimi Health, in a statement.
Regulatory Status and Current Access
Although the company is moving toward this large-scale study, none of Optimi Health’s MDMA drug products have received formal market authorization from Health Canada. The safety and efficacy of the therapy remain under investigation. The clinical trial serves as the mechanism for the company to gather the data required for future regulatory review.
Currently, the company's MDMA products are available only through restricted channels. In Australia, they are prescribed under the country's Authorized Prescriber Scheme. In Canada, access is limited to the Special Access Program, a regulatory pathway that allows for the use of unauthorized drugs to treat patients with serious or life-threatening conditions when other therapies have failed or are unavailable.
The Path to Registration
Phase 3 trials are the final stage of clinical testing before a company can submit a new drug application to regulators like Health Canada for general market approval. By focusing on a demographic with high rates of PTSD, Optimi aims to demonstrate the efficacy of its synthetic MDMA in a controlled, clinical environment.
This trial is a strategic shift for the firm as it progresses its natural psilocybin research. The company intends to move both its synthetic MDMA and natural psilocybin programs toward formal registration. This process would transition the substances from experimental use under special programs to authorized medical treatments.
