U.S. diesel prices surpassed $6 a gallon for the first time on record as President Donald Trump announced an agreement between Ukraine and Russia to halt strikes on energy infrastructure to ease global fuel supply crunches.

National average diesel prices climbed to a range of $6.06 to $6.23 per gallon, driven by concurrent supply disruptions stemming from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and fighting between the U.S. and Iran.

"Mr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing. He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia," Trump said during an official visit to Ireland on Sunday, according to a CNBC report. "Let him go after targets but not diesel fuel because he's causing a shortage of diesel. This isn't done by the Middle East; this is done by what's happening with Russia and Ukraine."

Global Energy Strains and Crude Benchmarks

The record fuel prices coincide with surging international crude benchmarks. International benchmark Brent crude futures with November expiry rose 3.6% to $108.41 per barrel, extending gains after climbing more than 20% over the past month amid military clashes involving the U.S. and Iran in the Middle East.

Refined product flows have simultaneously tightened. Net exports of diesel and gasoil from Gulf countries in August stood at just over a quarter of their volume prior to the war on Iran beginning in February, according to an International Energy Agency report cited by PBS NewsHour.

Diplomatic Responses From Kyiv and Moscow

Leadership in both Ukraine and Russia acknowledged the framework to pause attacks on critical infrastructure following Trump's announcements.

"If our partners are ready to ensure that Russia genuinely refrains from striking our electricity system, other energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and food supply routes, then, of course, we are ready to ensure a corresponding halt to our strikes," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on social media on Monday, according to Investing.com.

Kremlin officials similarly expressed cautious alignment with the proposal to shield economic facilities from further aerial campaigns.

"Any call on the Kyiv regime to stop attacks on civilian economic infrastructure can only be welcomed," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said during a conference call with reporters, according to a CNBC report.

What Is at Stake for Freight and Consumers

High-cost diesel directly impacts commercial trucking, agricultural logistics, and industrial supply chains, acting as an inflationary mechanism across the economy. With U.S. averages exceeding the $6 threshold alongside strained Middle Eastern export capacity, the proposed energy truce represents a direct diplomatic intervention intended to restore refinery outputs and stabilize transport fuel costs.
