Ukrainian drone strikes have disabled three major Yandex data centers within four days, forcing the company to shift its Yandex Cloud platform into emergency mode and threatening the development of its core artificial intelligence models.

The attacks targeted critical infrastructure in three distinct locations: Sasovo in the Ryazan region on October 7-8, Kaluga on October 9, and Vladimir on October 11. The destruction of these facilities marks a notable escalation in the targeting of Russian digital infrastructure.

"We always respond in mirror-like fashion," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the strikes on Russian data infrastructure.

Impact on AI Development

The most severe damage occurred at the Sasovo facility, which reportedly housed two of the three supercomputers Yandex relies on to develop its generative AI model, YandexGPT. The loss of this hardware creates a bottleneck for the company's research division, as these systems were specifically configured for the high-compute requirements of training large language models.

Following the initial reports of the strikes, Yandex Cloud notified its enterprise customers on October 11 that the platform is now operating in "emergency mode." The company advised clients to activate their own disaster recovery plans, signaling that service stability for cloud-hosted applications remains uncertain while engineers work to reroute traffic and restore data accessibility.

Financial Market Response

The infrastructure damage has triggered a sharp sell-off in Yandex shares. Following the initial wave of attacks, the company's market capitalization dropped 5.4%, resulting in a loss of 77 billion rubles, or approximately $918.5 million, over two days of trading.

Infrastructure Vulnerability

Data centers are foundational to modern digital economies, serving as the physical housing for servers, networking equipment, and storage arrays that power search engines and government services. By targeting three separate hubs across different regions, the strikes have challenged the redundancy of Yandex's network.

Major technology firms typically maintain geographic redundancy to ensure uptime during localized hardware failures, but the simultaneous loss of primary and secondary processing power in Sasovo, Kaluga, and Vladimir forces the company to rely on remaining, potentially overloaded infrastructure. The stability of Yandex's digital ecosystem now depends on its ability to recover data from backups and restore compute capacity before further outages affect its broader service suite.
