UBS raised its price target on Marathon Petroleum (NYSE:MPC) to $450 from $321, maintaining a Buy rating on expectations of structurally elevated refining margins, according to an Investing.com report. The upward revision reflects stronger profitability drivers across the company's refining portfolio compared with prior quarters.
Second-Quarter Financial Performance
Marathon Petroleum reported financial metrics for the second quarter of 2026, bolstered by operational efficiency and favorable market conditions. The company posted earnings of $17.73 per share on revenue of $52.34 billion, alongside adjusted EBITDA reaching $8.5 billion.
Operational performance improved during the period. Marathon Petroleum delivered a capture rate of 112% in the second quarter of 2026, representing an increase from 99% in the first quarter of 2026.
Shareholder Returns and Capital Allocation
Driven by quarterly cash generation, Marathon Petroleum accelerated its capital return programs. The refiner returned approximately $2.8 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases in the second quarter of 2026, compared with $1.0 billion in the first quarter.
UBS Market Valuation Context
During these sector developments, broader financial markets priced in shifts across institutional equities. Finnhub market data quote for UBS Group AG shows the stock trading at $55.38, down 0.54% from its previous close of $55.68 as of September 4, 2026.
What Elevated Refining Margins Mean for Operators
Refining margins measure the difference between the cost of crude oil inputs and the market value of refined petroleum products like gasoline and diesel. Structurally elevated margins provide downstream operators with higher cash flows, enabling expanded capital return programs and debt reduction across the sector.
